Roxy Music First Album5/3/2021
Stadium Rock bands like Journey shied away from slow songs, but when they reluctantly agreed to record this song, it became their biggest hit.It was announced over the PA system that he was suffering from Double Vision.John tells that story and explains what MTV meant to his career. If theres one thing thats important to stress, its that Roxy Music was perhaps the first post-modern album of the 1970s, painted onto a blank and endless canvas, injected with a variety of manic musical styles that while looking forward, were balanced by the visions they brought with them from the past.
One cannot help but note the sense of detachment that drifts through the entire body of work, certainly theres bit of romanticism, as heard on To H.B. Humphrey Bogart), yet even that song, while projecting a style and grace that would come to define the music of Roxy, has been fitted with a longing for something that was, and in the same breath, never was, as Bogart was pure fiction. ![]() There was much to take in on the release, as with all future albums the material and sounds would encompass nearly everything known. When stacked up against albums by other bands which were tied up neatly and themed, Roxy Music was expansive and disjointed, like the supernova of an acid trip hitting all at once, blinding the senses, bewildering the visuals and challenging intellectual curiosity. As bright and wondrous as the music was, Brian Ferry wished his essence to be just as big and compelling, where the centerstage persona of the band did not stand in contrast to the music, but stood to the side of it, as big, as important and as compelling, meaning there were two intertwined dynamics functioning and drawing off of each other simultaneously. While holding that thought, the one element that infused all of this, yet again allowed these two concepts to stand apart was the singular aspect of Phil Manzanera, who came onboard just weeks before the cocktail party began, where his instrumentations brought a cohesive nature to the band, allowing for their art-rock presentation to flower under his guitar wizardry. That being said, the entire outing is raw with emotion, even in its quieter moments, where the group is throwing everything that they have at an illusion, not that that illusion is not obtainable, but because the album Roxy Music is entirely about the purpose of chase and plotting the course with the game being afoot. All in all, perhaps there was no reason for Roxy Music to ever exist beyond this record, as the band was nothing more than an immaculate conception, and to bring that conception into reality, as they ebbed toward on their other seven outings, was to diminish the splendor of this crazy hazed tumbling bit of fascinating bewilderment.
